Simon McVerry has been involved in a wide variety of creative pursuits over the last 20 years. A love of sculpture and carving has found expression in a wide range of projects which have been interwoven with his life path as a sailor, forester and ecologist. In recent years this passion has resulted in the creation of a number of award winning and inspirational art pieces which have featured at cultural, music and art festivals.
A series of four mullet were hand carved from a single plantation grown Hoop Pine. Stained glass fins were constructed to represent the translucent fins. This work was funded by the SCRC through Floating Land and supported by the Noosa Biosphere. It was used to highlight the story of the fish in our local estuarine and marine ecosystems. The work highlighted the indigenous, historical and contemporary connection to this important food resource.
Sculptural piece created from timber, ply and glass representing the Estuary Stingray. The work was commissioned to be part of the Floating Land environmental festival held on Lake Cootharaba at Boreen Point. A graceful silent creature camouflaged in the shallows of the water. The work was suspended just above the waterline creating an impression of a creature flying within its dynamic natural environment.
